PCD stands for “propaganda-cum-distribution”. In a PCD pharma franchise, a pharmaceutical company authorises a partner to promote (“propaganda”) and distribute its branded products in a defined area. The partner buys products from the company and sells them to chemists, clinics and hospitals in that area.

Who does what

Pharma company Franchise partner
Products Supplies branded, labelled products Chooses the product mix for the area
Promotion Provides visual aids, product cards and other promotional material Visits doctors and chemists and builds prescriptions
Orders Shares the price list, invoices and dispatches Places orders, pays as agreed, manages local stock
Compliance Maintains its own licences and quality system Holds a valid drug licence and GST registration for wholesale trade

Why people choose the PCD model

  • Lower starting investment than launching your own brand. There is no manufacturing commitment or brand registration.
  • A ready portfolio. You can start with products that already have labels, packs and a price list.
  • Control over your own business. You decide which doctors and chemists to work with and how to grow.

Questions to ask a PCD company

  1. Which certifications do you hold, and what exactly do they cover? Read the scope on the certificate. For example, a certificate for “trading and marketing of medicines” is not a manufacturing certificate.
  2. Who manufactures the products? Ask for the manufacturer’s name on the label and its licence details.
  3. What are the trade terms? Ask about payment terms, dispatch method, and the expiry and breakage policy.
  4. How are territories handled? Get any territory arrangement in writing.
  5. What promotional support is included? Ask for samples of the visual aids and literature.
